thought process, questions, and picking Emery

Emily's questions in purple

Emery's responses/overrulings in black.

2/26/08

Emery has given me the job of starting to type in the terms that we (he) have agreed upon for our big, giant list. However, it seems that every term brings with it more questions and often times, changes to the original thought.

For example, originally we had down "a.m." and "p.m." as per AP style, however upon further review...

We noticed that the use of "am" and "pm", with no periods was already prolific throughout the company.

and instead of fighting for what would only be a moral victory, we went with what would be most practical. Because we get to make those decisions. Cool.

Next "discussion" revolved around the use of baloney vs. bologna- with the first being "foolish or exaggerated talk" and the second being "luncheon meat". But in our unique line of business, both versions have the possibility of usage.

Still in the list of B words, we come to Blond/Blonde and Brunet/Brunette. Now the brunettes I feel pretty strongly about- personally I've never seen "brunet" in common use. But the blondes got more complicated. The AP definition for usage says that "blonde" refers to women, while "blond" refers to men, and when speaking strictly to hair color. Personally, I thought we should stick to one or the other, and preferably the one without the "e", because I think that one is what most people defer to anyway.

But, after looking up what common industry use is, as well as checking with the style sources we are using for inspiration, we are going with the AP style on this one. Even if it means more typing.

Had some discussion about the word "cellphone". We originally had this listed as two words- cell phone, as per AP, but Em was looking at the Lucky Style Guide, and they had it listed as one word. We checked the Wired source, and they used one word as well. We let majority rule on this one and bucked AP's traditions. One word it is.

Okay, that's all the grammar discussion I can take for one night. Emery, feel free to say your piece and/or defend your decisions. We'll meet again soon.

3/11/08- Couldn't meet in person this week, so here is our communication via IM throughout the night...

Emily says:

use "cable knit" as a noun in a sentance

Emery says:

Emily looped fabulous in her new cable knit sweater.

Emily says:

that's an adjective and has a hyphen. the noun version isn't hyphened, but I need an example

Emery says:

cable-knit sweater

Emery says:

adjective modifying sweater

Emily says:

I know that!

Emery says:

Emily's favorite type of sweater is a cable knit.

Emery says:

I have to go check on Isaiah.

Emily says:

okay

Emery says:

sorry

Emily says:

no prob

Emily says:

when you get back- is Caeser salad worthy of inclusion?

Emily says:

and do you agree with the spelling?

Emily says:

and cafe (can't figure out how to make the accent over the "e" in a chat, but it should be there)

The following message could not be delivered to all recipients:

and cafe (can't figure out how to make the accent over the "e" in a chat, but it should be there)

Emily says:

and cafe (can't figure out how to make the accent over the "e" in a chat, but it should be there)

Emery says:

I'm not sure we'd ever need Caesar salad.

Emery says:

will there.

Emery says:

sorry 'bout that.

Emily says:

it's okay.

Emily says:

I know we say it, but would you put a recipe on dot com?

Emery says:

yeah, it's possible.

Emery says:

But what's the question?

Emily says:

does wired have an opinion on "chat room"

Emery says:

hmm. not sure. I know for certain we'd never say chat room though.

Emery says:

lemme check, though.

Emily says:

just if we needed to include it. Caesar is capitalized but not salad

Emily says:

don't we have chat rooms?

Emery says:

nope.

Emery says:

we have blogs.

Emery says:

And we will have message boards.

Emery says:

But no live chat.

Emery says:

Oh, the salad thing ... I totally agree with it.

Emily says:

we used to on occassion but I guess not anymore

Emily says:

I'll put the salad in, we can always take it out later if we want

Emery says:

wired says "chat rooms"

Emery says:

two words

Emily says:

that's what lucky says too

Emery says:

can put it in for fun.

Emily says:

k

Emily says:

yeah, they used to make guests do chats after their shows. with someone else doing all the typing. I guess there was a revolt on that...

Emery says:

Yeah, haven't heard anything about that.

Emily says:

it was a couple years ago.

Emery says:

Hmm.

Emily says:

if "color-blocking" is hyphened, can I assume "color-block" is too?

Emery says:

hmm.

Emery says:

is color-blocking always hyphenated?

Emily says:

according to lucky

Emery says:

nice, we'll have to put that into action.

Emily says:

word

Emily says:

do you want "blocking"? I was just going to put "block"- that's how i hear it mostly

Emery says:

I think the trend is called color blocking.

Emery says:

We have it up on the site now.

Emery says:

Without hyphen.

Emily says:

well apparently you're wrong

Emily says:

next- lucky has "coauthor" and "cofounder" no hyphen, but AP says yes hyphen

Emery says:

I like hyphen.

Emily says:

got it

Emery says:

I'm here, sorry.

Emery says:

What do you need from me?

Emery says:

I'm highly distracted by a heavy volume of HSN work.

Emery says:

And I apologize profusely for it.

Emery says:

I'm not a good person right now.

Emery says:

Well, I'm OK, just not great.

Emery says:

OK, yeah, I'm not that great.

Emery says:

I suck (fishing for compliments).

Emery says:

Kidding.

Emily says:

that's okay. I don't need anything at the moment. what's going on with work?

Emery says:

I had 6 hours of meetings today.

Emily says:

you'll get compliments when you start explaining!

Emery says:

which doesn't work for someone who is also expected to produce.

Emery says:

Deliverables.

Emily says:

no worries on this end. I'm cruising through my list and I'll send through a message when I have questions/discrepencies

Emery says:

that's awesome. thanks.

Emily says:

jsut let me know if you're going to be away for a while or if you sign off...

Emery says:

fair enough.

Emily says:

k. get to work!

Emily says:

how badly can I plagerize dictionary.com?

Emery says:

um ... just use synonyms.

Emery says:

then, it's not plagiarism.

Emery says:

Hehe.

Emily says:

okay. but their definitiion of "complement" is really good.

Emery says:

ok.

Emery says:

like complement vs. compliment?

Emily says:

yep

Emery says:

sweet.

Emery says:

well, borrow liberally.

Emery says:

But don't plagiarize.

Emery says:

If you can avoid it.

Emily says:

will do

Emery says:

And if you have to directly, just site it.

Emery says:

I guess.

Emily says:

i used a small part of theirs, but it was the part that said it "completes" which is a hard word to avoid with "complement"

Emery says:

sweet.

Emily says:

i made it work

Emery says:

excellent.

Emery says:

you are excellent.

Emily says:

thanks for the compliment

Emily says:

I'm sure you'll be excellent next time

Emery says:

HAHA.

Emery says:

Next time.

Emery says:

I suck.

Emily says:

you don't suck

Emily says:

your job does

Emily says:

not your fault

Emily says:

besides, I assume you still haven't called school, so really I'm the one who needs to show effort, at least until may

Emery says:

haha.

Emery says:

how'd you know?

Emily says:

I think my bad avoidence habits have rubbed off on you

Emily says:

have you talked to trey? about not actually being in the class? you know he'd help you...

Emery says:

I haven't talked to him in a bit.

Emily says:

do you agree with lucky to never use "zirconium", just zirconia? I

Emily says:

I'm surprised he isn't on your case about the enrollment thing.

Emily says:

unless he doesnt' realize

Emery says:

zirconia all the way!

Emery says:

he might not realize

Emily says:

(shaking my head at you)

Emily says:

alright, enough guild

Emily says:

guilt

Emily says:

get back to work

Emily says:

done with the C's!

Emery says:

SWEET!

Emily says:

how do you feel about "de-stress"? lucky has hyphen, AP has no opinion. should I differentiate from Tony Little's name brand?

Emery says:

How's Little say it?

Emily says:

DeStress

Emily says:

but it's a brand name

Emily says:

what does wired say about dot com? lucky hyphens, AP has no opinion

Emery says:

dot-com.

Emily says:

got it

Emily says:

Not necessarily tonight, but when you get a chance take a look at "dress" in lucky. not a lot of rhyme or reason to using as one word or two.

Emily says:

D's are done. taking a bathroom break.

Emery says:

sweet.

Emery says:

Ds done.

Emily says:

that's how I took it. anyway, I'm back and working n E's

Emily says:

do you and wired agree with "e-commerce"?

Emery says:

yes, we agree.

Emily says:

lucky capitalizes Empire Dress and Empire-dress. how do you feel about that?

Emery says:

I don't get it.

Emery says:

Sorry, went to get a drink and change.

Emily says:

don't get what I'm asking, or why they cap.?

Emery says:

Why they cap, yeah.

Emily says:

me either

Emery says:

don't worry about it, I'd say.

Emily says:

okay, I won't

Emery says:

can you do me a huge favor and send me a link to the stuff you're working on?

Emily says:

yep. let me save it first. I'm working on the same wiki page we started last time

Emily says:

http://4260morefiles.pbwiki.com/starting%20our%20list

Emery says:

Let me know when I can edit.

Emily says:

when you look at the page, take a look at your "every day" entry. I'm confused.

Emery says:

ok.

Emily says:

I'm out of edit. are you going to be in there awhile?

Emily says:

they hyphen "faux-patent-leather" so I assume they hyphen "faux-leather"

Emery says:

nope ... not long

Emery says:

dangit!

Emery says:

what's the invite key?

Emily says:

open!

Emery says:

wiki password.

Emery says:

Haha.

Emily says:

we go through this everytime

Emery says:

We're always there for a each other, tough

Emily says:

usually one of us remembers

Emily says:

hey, happy spring break by the way. not that you're a student or anything...

Emery says:

it's spring break?

Emery says:

cool!

Emery says:

Guess I'll take the week of then.

Emery says:

off.

Emery says:

out of edit mode.

Emily says:

cool.

Emily says:

yeah, break means nothing when you have a real job. boo.

Emery says:

true dat.

Emily says:

I guess I had my spring break two weeks ago. I miss vacation.

Emily says:

so, you cool with faux-leather?

Emily says:

I also question their use of flat iron vs. flat-iron.

Emery says:

I would prefer just feaux leather, unless you're saying feaux-leather handbag.

Emery says:

as a modifier.

Emery says:

I'm confusing, huh.

Emily says:

isn't that mostly how it would be used though?

Emily says:

and they hyphen faux-patent-leather.

Emily says:

twice

Emery says:

Haha.

Emery says:

you keep getting a this little guy x-

Emery says:

X-P

Emery says:

on my chat window

Emery says:

fauX-Patent-leather

Emery says:

that's how it's showing up.

Emery says:

anyhow ..

Emily says:

that's weird because he isn't showing up on my screen

Emily says:

I'm jealous

Emery says:

faux-patent-leather shoes

Emery says:

ah, well, I think we need the hyphen, if it's modifying the shoes or the handbag.

Emily says:

so as an adj.

Emily says:

same as pretty much everythign else. hyphen the adj. not the noun

Emery says:

yep.

Emily says:

k.

Emily says:

do we need frequent flier?

Emery says:

yeah, for luggage maybe.

Emily says:

cool

Emily says:

through the G's

Emery says:

I am currently away from the computer.

Emily says:

going to stop here. tired and the H's look evil.

3/25/2008 9:32:06 PM Emery Emily Why say two words when you can say one? I’m satisfied leaving it as timesavers and timesaving.

3/25/2008 9:41:31 PM Emery Emily Is that in Lucky?

3/25/2008 9:48:40 PM Emily Emery yes

3/25/2008 9:48:48 PM Emery Emily cool.

3/25/2008 9:48:55 PM Emery Emily I'm good with it.

3/25/2008 9:49:03 PM Emery Emily they know more about fashion copy than me.

3/25/2008 9:49:10 PM Emily Emery help- I need an example of health care (noun) vs. healthcare (adj.)

3/25/2008 9:49:32 PM Emery Emily don't worry about it.

3/25/2008 9:49:55 PM Emery Emily do you think we'd use that?

3/25/2008 9:50:03 PM Emily Emery not sure

3/25/2008 9:50:05 PM Emery Emily I'm not trying to be mean, I just can't think of where we would.

3/25/2008 10:04:27 PM Emily Emery do you thing "internet" should be capitalized? Lucky does

3/25/2008 10:04:41 PM Emery Emily Funny you mention that.

3/25/2008 10:04:53 PM Emily Emery hmmm

3/25/2008 10:04:56 PM Emery Emily I think I linked to an article in Wired about that.

3/25/2008 10:05:07 PM Emery Emily It's AP style to capitalize Internet, Web, etc.

3/25/2008 10:05:09 PM Emily Emery i thought the question sounded familiar

3/25/2008 10:05:32 PM Emery Emily let's lowercase it, like Wired.

3/25/2008 10:05:43 PM Emery Emily but we don't say internet, really.

3/25/2008 10:05:47 PM Emily Emery that would be my preference

3/25/2008 10:05:48 PM Emery Emily Still it's good to have a standard on that.

3/25/2008 10:05:53 PM Emery Emily cool!

3/25/2008 10:09:30 PM Emily Emery hitting the "L's"

3/25/2008 10:09:44 PM Emily Emery L. A. as in Los Angeles- include?

3/25/2008 10:10:00 PM Emery Emily Yes, but I would note Los Angeles on first reference.

3/25/2008 10:10:07 PM Emery Emily Then, L.A. is acceptable.

3/25/2008 10:10:21 PM Emery Emily L.A. for Los Angeles, only after first reference.

3/25/2008 10:10:32 PM Emily Emery got it

3/25/2008 10:12:53 PM Emery Emily Can I throw some brand names somewhere?
